Women’s water polo team honored for academic excellence

The Connecticut College women's water polo team has been honored by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) for its academic excellence.

With a mean grade point average of 3.55, the Camels were ranked top among reporting teams, finishing in front of Harvard University (3.491), Macalester College (3.48), Brown University (3.41) and Indiana University (3.36). Longtime rival Washington & Jefferson was ranked sixth (3.23) with Princeton University (3.11), Utica College (2.99) and Penn State Behrend (2.96) all meeting the 2.75 threshold to garner the team accolade from the CWPA. 

In addition to the top academic ranking for the team, 11 individual members of the squad were honored for their athletic and academic performance on the CWPA women's varsity scholar athlete team.

The individual honors are broken down in three categories: Outstanding (3.71-4.0 GPA); Superior (3.41-3.7 GPA); and Excellent (3.2-3.4 GPA).

All-American Kelsey Millward ’16 and first-year Sarah Pursley ’18 were honored as Outstanding performers. Millward was recognized as an honorable mention All-American for the second time in her prolific playing career. She led the Camels with 72 goals and 73 steals, adding 34 assists for the Division III Champs.  Pursley turned aside 28 shots while adding seven steals and one assist in her rookie season in goal.

Tri-captain Abbey Wrobleski ’16, Ashley Amey ’16, Brianna Harrity ’17, Kate Jacobson ’15, Shannon Cry ’18, Sophia Soriano ’18 and Susan Doetsch ’17 were recognized as Superior performers. Wrobleski tallied 12 goals, 31 assists and 36 steals for the three-time champs. Amey posted a team-best 117 saves while adding nine steals and five assists in the cage. Harrity registered 14 goals with 21 assists and 17 steals in her first season of action with the Camels.

A leader and tri-captain for the Camels, Jacobson was honored as a second team All-American. She wrapped up her prolific playing career with 193 goals scored, earning All-America honors for the second straight season. Cry had 16 goals, 20 assists and 41 steals in her first season for Head Coach Matt Anderson's squad. Soriano chipped in with 11 goals, five assists and nine steals, while Doetsch posted 71 saves to go with 12 steals and three assists in goal.

Isabelle Baneux ’15 and Sarah Sovia ’17 were honored in the Excellent category. A 2015 CWPA Honorable Mention All-American selection, Baneux dished out a team-best 47 assists while ranking second on the squad with 68 assists. She scored 54 goals in her most productive season in the pool. Sovia contributed with 30 saves, 12 steals and an assist in her second season of net-minding duties.

Under the direction of Head Coach Matt Anderson, the Camels hoisted their third consecutive Division III Championship Trophy, setting a single season program record with 18 victories.
